Kickoff - 9-14-2016
On Wednesday, September 14th, in Hartford, Connecticut, Voice launched its kickoff event. In attendance were Governor Dannel Malloy, Secretary of State, Denise Merrill, and Dr. Melissa Hickey, Director of Literacy. All three provided inspirational words of wisdom to the 60 student members of Voice and encouraged them to get involved and chase their dreams. Trumbull Superintendent, Dr. Gary Cialfi, and and State Board Education Member, Stephen Wright, also spoke to the students and urged them to be the best that they can be. Also in attendance were Dan Neumann, Co-Founder of the ACE Foundation, Marc Guarino, Principal of Trumbull High School, and teachers, Eric August and Jack Labarca. Advisor of Voice and Social Studies Consultant for the State Department of Education, Stephen Armstrong, inspired students by explaining how one person can truly make a difference. Isha Dalal, Founder and President of Voice, took the podium and described her journey to create Voice to the members.
The day was launched with activities educating members about literacy rates and the action that students can take to help close the achievement gap in Connecticut. Students were given a tour of the Capitol and worked together to start creating legislation to propose next January.
The day was a success, and every student is excited to embark on a journey to make a difference in the world.
Donating allows Voice to cover event costs and pursue community projects. One event that the Voice members are working on is the Library on Wheels. In May, Voice members will drive through Connecticut giving books to kids who need it for free.
